Rules, FAQ, and Schedule!
Sticky: Feb. 17th, 2018 11:38 am Children of the Stone is a gift exchange meant to celebrate the lore, cultures, and lives of the dwarves of Thedas. The dwarves of Dragon Age deserve more love; we aim to help fill that void!
This is an exchange for both writers and artists. The minimum requirement for writers is 1,000 words; the minimum requirement for artists is one finished piece, whatever that means for your style, in digital or traditional media.
Schedule
· Nominations: March 2–11
· Signups: March 12–25
· Assignments: March 26
· Due Date: May 6
· Works Revealed: May 14
· Creators Revealed: May 21
And that’s a wrap!
May. 22nd, 2018 12:51 pm Creators have been revealed–and with that, the 2018 edition of Children of the Stone has come to an end. The collection will remain open for a few more hours in case anyone has a last-minute treat to slide in, and then we will be closed until our second edition opens next year.
In the meantime, if you’re hungry for dwarf content, we have a nice little feast for you! Go check out the works on AO3, and be sure to let their creators know you appreciate them.
Now that the collection has been fully revealed, you are free to post your works on your personal pages. If you choose to upload them on tumblr, please do tag us! We’ll reblog them there to spread the love just a little bit further.
Thank you so much to everyone who signed up, took pinch hits, offered pinch hits, made treats, beta read, cheered us on, and supported the collection. We truly couldn’t have done it without you. Here’s to many more years of content celebrating dwarves!
The collection is live!
May. 17th, 2018 02:50 pmI repeat: the collection is live! Thank you so much to everyone for your patience with our late-stage delays. And now, your wait has been rewarded. There are thirty-five new pieces of fic and art in our humble little collection centred on the dwarves of Thedas. Go take a look, and be sure to let the creators know how much you appreciate their hard work!
The collection will remain open for submissions until the creators’ names are revealed, which will be on Tuesday, May 22 rather than the original planned date of May 21. If you want to add to it, take a look at the requests to see if anything speaks to you and consider making a treat for someone!
My deepest thanks to everyone who participated and cheered us on. Happy browsing, everyone!
Reveals will be pushed back.
May. 14th, 2018 01:41 amWe’re still waiting on the last couple of assignments, which have been slightly delayed due to health issues. As I’m sure you can all agree, it’s more important to make sure everyone participating has a gift, so I’ll be pushing back reveals a bit until we get everything in. I’m hoping to have everything ready to go by tomorrow, but I’ll keep you updated! Thanks for your patience, everyone.
And for anyone who was still thinking of putting something into the collection, treats can be posted up until creators are revealed on May 21. Now would be a great time to go take a look at the requests and see if anything speaks to you!
Our first pinch hit is here!
Apr. 14th, 2018 09:20 pmA written assignment must be at least 1,000 words long; an art assignment must be a fully finished piece. To claim this pinch hit, email cotsexchange@gmail.com with your AO3 username. The first person to request it will receive it; if you don’t hear back from us, assume it’s gone to someone else.

Assignments are out!
Mar. 27th, 2018 05:13 amThank you to everyone who made nominations and signed up for the exchange. Assignments have been sent out. We hope you’ll enjoy the prompts you’ve been given and they provide you with lots of ideas for new dwarf content. Onwards, artists and writers!
Assignments are due on Sunday May 6 at 11:59 p.m. EST.
Fulfilling Your Assignment
Stories and art must be created for this exchange, and must be able to stand on their own. When creating your gift, writers and artists must adhere to all their recipient’s triggers/DNWs, and all posted material with not safe for work or potentially triggering content must be appropriately tagged. If you have been assigned something you know you cannot create, contact the mods ASAP and we will provide you with an alternate assignment.
Writers are encouraged but not required to have a beta reader. A form will be provided for interested beta readers to sign up to offer their services.
This exchange is anonymous—so please don’t talk publicly about your work or otherwise reveal who your recipient is until the creators are revealed at the end of the exchange. Likewise, do not post your finished work outside of AO3 until the exchange is finished. For first-time exchange participants, a guide will be provided explaining how to post your work to the event collection, where it will remain safely anonymous and unrevealed until the appropriate time.
Pinch Hits
If you know you won’t be able to complete your assignment in time, it is important that you default on it as promptly as you can. This will give the moderators time to post your assignment for the pinch hitters, to ensure that everyone who signed up gets a gift. To default on an assignment, go to the Assignments panel on your main AO3 dashboard.
If you are interested in participating in the exchange but weren’t able to sign up, consider taking on a pinch hit! These are assignments that would otherwise go unfulfilled by their original creators. Pinch hits will be posted here and on Dreamwidth, and will be assigned to pinch hitters on a first come, first serve basis.
Treats
Not signed up or available to take pinch hits? You can still draw or write a treat! Treats are extra gifts that can be created by anyone. Unlike assignments, art treats can be sketches or otherwise not “fully finished,” and written treats do not have a minimum word count.
To add a treat to the event, simply post your work into the collection “childrenofthestone2018” and gift it to the recipient whose prompt inspired you. The full list of prompts can be found here.
You can also gift a work to the exchange in general, if a particular tag in our tagset calls to you and no one requested it. For a full list of eligible tags, check out our tag spreadsheet here.
Happy exchange, everyone!
Still got questions? We’ve got answers. The moderators are available to answer questions here, on Tumblr, or in the exchange Discord server.

Signups are open!
Mar. 16th, 2018 01:54 amIt’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for: time to join the exchange and make your prompts. Click here to go to the signup form!
Your signup must include at least four requests and four offers. Please ensure you consider both writers and artists in your prompts.
Remember that all tags in our tagset are filed as characters. You can match on individual characters (for gen content) or on groups (for content focused on romantic or platonic relationships). To request or offer gen focused on Sigrun’s life, use the tag “Sigrun.” To request or offer content focused on a relationship between Sigrun and Velanna, use the tag “group: Sigrun/Velanna” (for romantic content) or “group: Sigrun & Velanna” (for a platonic relationship). You do not need to use both tags unless you would be equally happy to match on gen or relationship-focused content. If you are only interested in shipfic, do not use a solo character tag.
When you post your work to AO3 later, tag as normal—these specifications are only for matching purposes within the exchange.
You cannot request or offer tags that have not been nominated.
Requests
Your requests are where you can list specific prompts, general likes, triggers and DNWs, and anything else you want your writer or artist to know. You will also have the opportunity to link a letter with more detail about your requests. Try to include enough detail to give your writer or artist something to work with without going overboard: the idea is to provide a jumping-off point, not a complex set of instructions.
Remember: solo character tags are for gen, group tags are for relationship-focused content. Do not tag your prompt with both unless you’d be happy to match on ships or gen.
Offers
When making your offers, if you are interested in creating gen content focused on a specific character, offer for the character tag; if you are interested in creating content focused on a specific relationship (romantic or platonic), offer for the appropriate relationship tag. Your offers may also include a list of any content you are not willing to create, content you are specifically interested in creating, and any other concerns you might have with regards to matching, though this is not required.
Are you ready? Then go to the signup form!
Want to check what characters and relationships are available? We have a spreadsheet of all approved tags right here.

Nominations end tomorrow!
Mar. 10th, 2018 11:35 amNominations close on March 11 at 11:59 p.m., so if you haven’t gotten your nominations in yet make sure to do that now.
More information about nominating can be found here!
The tagset can be found here!
A spreadsheet of all approved tags can be found here!
We also have a few tags that need clarification or modification:
- Dagna/Original Mage: Original characters must have their gender specified. If this tag is not modified before nominations close it will not be approved.
- Varric/Cassandra: If you nominated this and it hasn’t been approved, you can change your nomination to something else; it’s already in the tagset.
- Female Brosca & Rica: This is also already in the tagset and you can use that slot to nominate something else.
- Nonbinary Brosca & Rica: This is also already in the tagset and can be changed to something else.
- Oghren/Female Warden: If this tag hasn’t been edited by the time nominations close it will be approved, never fear, but if you have any preference at all about the Warden’s background, please do specify!
Signups will open on March 12. Hope you’re all excited!
Nomination Clarification Post 1
Mar. 3rd, 2018 12:11 am Our first day of nominations has drawn to a close, and we’re doing great: we have seventy approved nominations in the tagset already. Keep it up, guys!
However, we do have a few issues to sort out. If you see one of your suggestions here, go take a look at the nominations you submitted and edit any that haven’t been approved.
- Male Brosca/Zevran: This one is already in the tagset (in fact, that was one of your moderators). If there’s something else you wanted, go ahead and submit that instead, we’ve got you covered.
- Female Brosca/Zevran: Three people have suggested this already! For those of you who submitted it and haven’t seen it approved yet, again: you can nominate something else, you’re set.
- Sigrun: Also in the tagset already! Go ahead and make another suggestion.
- Iron Bull: My friends, I’m sorry to tell you this, but the Iron Bull is not a dwarf. This is not an eligible tag! Non-dwarf characters may only be nominated as a second character in a ship or friendship that also includes a dwarf.
Remember that during matching we will be using solo character tags specifically to match people for gen content. This isn’t like tagging a work, where you have to tag both the ship and the characters. If you are interested in a dwarf/non-dwarf ship, all you need to nominate is the ship itself.
Want to know what nominations are in the tagset already? We have a spreadsheet of approved tags right here.
Do you still need to make your nominations? Do you have anything to change? Here’s a handy link to the tagset!
Noms open!
Mar. 2nd, 2018 11:15 pm Nominations are open!
Are you ready to bring some dwarf love to the world? Nominate your favourite characters, pairings, and friendships to the Children of the Stone tagset.
Nominations will run until 11:59 p.m. EST on March 11.
Each person may make up to 10 nominations. You can nominate individual characters (or specific character groups) for gen or non-romance-focused fic/art, or ships for fic/art with a romantic theme. Characters nominated must be dwarves; ships must include at least one dwarven character. For the purpose of nominations and matching, all tags in our tagset will be filed as character tags.
What this means:
- If you are interested in requesting fic or art focused on Sigrun’s life, which may or may not include minor or non-specific elements of romance or friendship, nominate “Sigrun.”
- If you are interested in requesting fic or art focused on a romantic relationship between Sigrun and Velanna, nominate “group: Sigrun/Velanna.”
- If you are interested in requesting fic or art focused on a platonic friendship between Sigrun and Velanna, nominate “group: Sigrun & Velanna.”
Eligible characters include:
- Dwarven Wardens or Inquisitors (please specify gender)
- Dwarven companions and NPCs
- Dwarven characters from other Dragon Age media
- Historical dwarven characters
- Dwarven characters from canonical codex materials
- Golem characters who consider themselves dwarves
- Characters whose race is not stated in canon (specifically as dwarves—use the format “dwarf!NAME”)
- Original characters, in the format of (for example) “original casteless dwarf,” “original female Kal-Sharok dwarf,” “original Shaper,” etc. (if you are nominating for a ship, please ensure gender is specified)
You may not nominate specific dwarven OCs or canonical non-dwarf characters (except as a second member of a ship that also includes a dwarf).
Want to see what tags have been nominated already? We have a sortable tag spreadsheet available here!
Still got questions? We’ve got answers. The moderators are available to answer questions here, on Tumblr, or in the exchange Discord server.
